Hiller Know-How | How to Lower Your Electric Bills this Winter

Perhaps one of the biggest concerns among homeowners during the wintertime is dealing with high-energy bills. This can certainly be frustrating because while we would like our homes to be warm and cozy, we don’t want to risk racking up the bill.

At Hiller Electric, we are well versed in energy efficiency, which is why today we are going to give you some tips on how to lower your electric bills without sacrificing the comfort of a warm home. Take a look below.

Weatherproof your Home. A drafty home is one of the biggest culprits of high-energy bills. Tackle this problem by going throughout your home and sealing any gaps or cracks around windows or doors that are highly susceptible to drafts. If you are on a budget and are looking for a temporary fix, most hardware stores carry window film to cover drafty windows, which will help give you a peace of mind until you are ready to fix up the house.

Unplug when not in use. Believe it or not, certain electronic devices use up electricity even when they are not in use. To fix this problem, try unplugging your electronic devices, such as laptops or small kitchen appliances (i.e. blenders, coffee makers, etc) when they aren’t being used. There are also energy efficient power strips that will shut off the power, which you can use for devices like your TVs and more.

Invest in energy friendly products. If it is time for you to update any of your home appliances, whether it is a new dishwasher or a laundry machine, consider investing in appliances that are energy efficient. Though the cost up front may be more, you will certainly be saving yourself some money down the road.

Another step you might want to consider is switching out your traditional incandescent light bulbs to much more energy efficient ones, such as CFL (compact fluorescent light bulbs) or LED lights. Not only will these use 25-80% less energy than traditional incandescent, they will also last you 3-25 times longer, helping you save a pretty good chunk of money and headache.
