At Hiller Electric, our team is very important to us. They answer the customer’s calls, get out and do the job, and ultimately, are responsible for maintaining our reputation. So we would like you to get to know our team better. Today, we are highlighting one of our Residential Service Technicians, Shawn Vidlak. Check out his interview below.
Hi Shawn. To begin, would you mind telling us a little bit about your background?
Yeah. So I grew up here in Omaha, been here the whole time; never moved anywhere else. As far as working, it was never really my intention to become an electrician. I always knew I would be working with my hands—you know, doing some kind of trade, though.
I actually started out installing mainline TV cables underground. And about 17 or 18 years ago I was working for a company that was going out of business. My wife’s uncle was an electrician, and he asked me if I would be interested in making a switch. He then got me a job as an electrician, and that is where I met Scott Bang (Hiller Electric’s residential service manager). I worked with Scott for 11 years.
Then, when Scott moved over to Hiller Electric and things were pretty slow at my current job, I asked Scott if there were any job openings at Hiller. There were, and I started working at Hiller—been here for about six years now.
So as a residential service tech, what does your average day look like?
Well first thing in the morning, I get my assignments. Then I’ll load or stock the truck, picking up anything I need for the job. When I get to the job I’ll go over everything with the customer and make sure we are on the same page; I make sure that everything they discussed with my manager was communicated to me— so that there is no confusion before we start. Then I’ll do everything on the list, and I’m usually checking with the customer as I go. And then if they are still available when I’ve finished the job, I have them make sure everything is to their satisfaction. That is really important to me; I don’t want to leave the customer or the contractor unhappy. So if that first job doesn’t take me all day, I move on to the next one.
Do you have a team helping you out then?
No. I work by myself ninety percent of the time. I’m service orientated; I take care of service calls and small remodels.
As you know, at Hiller we are committed to quality service, can you tell us a little bit about how you try and act out this same commitment in your work?
I consider myself a people person. I’m sure other people at the shop will tell you—I’m very good at speaking with people. I want to say that I learned the most valuable people skills in High School, and I have used them every day since. You see, I’m not the biggest fan of cellphones; I’d rather talk to a customer or contractor in person. I think the social part of business has kind of gone away and I don’t like that, I want to make sure it stays a part of business, at least any business that I’m involved in.
For every job, I try my best to answer any questions or at least get someone else that can answer the questions. I will always try to find answers for my customers, so if I don’t know the answer, then I will call someone who can get the answer for them. I never want to leave a customer unhappy—that is really important to me.
In your opinion, what makes Hiller Electric unique compared to other companies in the area?
Honestly, just looking at other work, ours is high quality compared to some of the other stuff out there. So, our quality of work, and we are also very efficient.
Another great thing about Hiller is that we always do our best to try and accommodate a customer’s schedule. I often hear from customers that they have problems with other electricians sometimes not showing up, but when they call Hiller, we always show up—and on time.
Lastly, we just wanna know—what do you enjoy doing in your free time?
I spend a lot of time with family. I have three daughters that are all involved in dance and swimming, so the second I get off work I’m running to make sure my girls are active, and that I’m a part of it.
